GHMC Polls: High Court Pulls Up Telangana For Delay
The Hyderabad High Court directed the Telangana government to submit its reply within a week giving the dates for the conduct of the GHMC elections.
Hyderabad | 2nd February 2015
The Hyderabad High Court on Monday pulled up the Telangana government for the delay in conducting the elections for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
The High Court directed the state government to submit its reply within a week giving the dates for the conduct of the GHMC polls.
Condemning the lethargic attitude of the state government, the court said that the government could not be lenient on conducting the local bodies' elections for long.
It may be mentioned that the Telangana government on October 22, 2014, had directed the GHMC to begin the process of the delimitation of election wards as per the census of 2011.
The GO Ms No 12, issued by the Municipal Administration Department, was based on the direction of the High Court dated August 25, 2014, wherein the authorities were asked to carry out the delimitation of the wards as per the Census 2011 before holding the next GHMC polls.
The GHMC authorities had reportedly sought a three-month period to complete the delimitation process.
The term of the elected GHMC came to an end on December 3, 2014, and the State Government appointed GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar as the Special Officer for six months.
In view of the High Court orders, the State Government is expected to conduct the GHMC elections soon. (INN)
