High Court Extends GHMC Elections Deadline To January 31
The HC gave a reprieve to the Telangana government by allowing it to conduct elections to the GHMC before Jan, 2016. The earlier deadline was December 31.
The Hyderabad High Court today gave a reprieve to the Telangana government by allowing it to conduct elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) before January 31 next year. The earlier deadline was December 31.
The High Court announced its decision after hearing a petition filed by the Telangana government over the delay in conducting the GHMC elections.
The court also directed the government to complete all the preparations for elections by December 15.
Earlier, the High Court had directed the government to complete election process by end-December. However, there were allegations against the GHMC authorities that lakhs of voters' names were deleted from the rolls, and that has led to serious controversies involving GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar, a KCR protege, getting shunted out.
The GHMC however informed the court that the delay was due to the linking of Aadhar cards and division of wards, and sought a one-month extension.
