A group of eminent personalities including former judges on Monday appealed to the President of India Pranab Mukherjee to issue appropriate directions for the peaceful conduct of the proposed Telangana March (Chalo Hyderabad) on September 30.
The appeal has been made in a letter signed by 20 personalities including former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, University of Hyderabad chancellor Prof Ch Hanumantha Rao, former Chief Justice of the A P High Court Justice Sardar Ali Khan, former judge Upender Lal Waghray and others.
They appealed to the President to issue appropriate directions to the Centre to ensure that the state government does not resort to oppressive measures such as making preventive arrests and erecting wire fences in the city, and does not treat the March as a threat to the law and order situation.
They claimed that 13 out of the 15 ministers of the state Cabinet have written a letter demanding the immediate announcement of a Telangana state, and stated that it was the only option which would bring normalcy to the region.
Several MPs from the Congress party have openly declared support for the proposed Telangana March, they said. Therefore, they appealed to the President to take steps to ensure that the people do not lose faith in the democratic system. (INN)
