Ex-DGP and BJP leader Dinesh Reddy today pro-actively met the media to refute news reports that alleged that one of the former DGPs of united Andhra Pradesh was in cahoots with the slain gangster Nayeemuddin.
Reacting to the reports, he told the media that although he had nothing but respect for the Fourth Estate, this sort of "yellow journalism" was unacceptable by all standards.
Challenging the media to reveal the name of the DGP in question instead of resorting to allusions, he vehemently asserted that he had no connections with Nayeem, and threatened a defamation case against the TV channel that broadcast false reports.
"This TV channel had levelled allegations against me in the past before I was appointed as the DGP, and had to apologize even then," he pointed out.
While everyone who aided Nayeem, regardless of their position, should be brought to book, casting aspersions on innocents should not be tolerated, he said.
"The SIT is probing the case from all possible angles. The facts will come to light only after the investigation is done," he said. He asked the media to hand over any evidence which they found pertaining to the case, to the team.
The former DGP also said that he planned to demand an NIA investigation into the case if there were any gaps in the SIT investigation.
Talking about the relationship between surrendered Naxalites and informants, and the police, Reddy said that DGPs did not generally deal with police informants, and that only the DIGs interacted with them if and when needed. He added that police officers were allowed to extract information from surrendered Naxalites under the law. A flip side to this however was that Naxalites would sometimes use the names of police officers to make money illegally or extort people, he said, and added that he condemned such acts.
"Killing Nayeemuddin was the right thing to do. I laud the government and the State police for their relentless efforts in bringing him down," he said.
He also scoffed at his alleged involvment in the murder of the then Greyhounds' chief at the hands of Nayeem.
"I was 400 meters away from Vyas at the time of the brutal shooting," he claimed.
In order to clear the air about his own role, and to pass on sensitive information relating to Nayeemuddin's case, the ex-DGP said that he had sought an appointment with Telangana Chief Minister KCR.
