Amid the Centre recent contemplation to rethink the Haj subsidy, and the Supreme Court's views that the subsidy should be eventually abolished, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali addressed a letter to the Centre requesting it to not stop the "philanthropic" measure and instead increase it from Rs. 690 crores to Rs. 1,000 crores.
In the letter addressed to Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Mahmood Ali said that most pilgrims availing for the subsidy were very poor, and all of them should be covered under the plan.
"I request you to kindly look into the matter personally and see that all necessary measures are taken to continue and provide more subsidies and also increase the subsidy budget from Rs. 690 crores to Rs. 1,000 crores so that, more number of Muslim minority poor people will be brought under the cover,” he said in the letter, a copy of which was released to the media.
