During a hearing of the controversial Kancha Gachibowli case linked to the University of Hyderabad (HCU), the Supreme Court today issued stern warnings to the authorities.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai said, "It is not reasonable to cut down forests in the name of development. They tried to erase the forest overnight. I advocate sustainable development. If the forest is not protected, the relevant officials will be sent to a temporary prison."
When Justice Gavai asked whether the State government had taken steps to protect the forest land, the counsel representing the Telangana government said that all work on the land had been halted.
During the hearing, the respondents requested additional time to examine the affidavits filed by the Telangana State government. Granting the request, the court allowed two weeks and adjourned the matter to August 13.
