In a significant development, the Supreme Court has directed the Telangana government to hand over the investigation into the murders of lawyers Vaman Rao and his wife Nagamani to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The apex court also instructed the CBI to re-investigate the case and provide security to the petitioner.
For the unversed, Vaman Rao and Nagamani were brutally hacked to death in broad daylight by unidentified assailants on a road near Kalvacharla in Ramagiri mandal, Peddapalli district, on February 17, 2017. The incident sent shockwaves across the State, prompting widespread protests by lawyers. Several arrests were made, but the investigation remains inconclusive.
Rao's father, Kishan Rao, had petitioned the Supreme Court for a CBI probe. A bench of Justice M M Sundaresh and Justice A C K Singh heard the plea.
The court had earlier directed the Telangana government to submit all case records, including videos, for review before deciding on a CBI inquiry. The State government has since submitted all evidence and stated that it has no objection to transferring the case.
Following this, the apex court ordered the case to be handed over to the CBI for further investigation.
