The Cyberabad police today busted a fake helmet manufacturing and sale racket, and arrested two persons in connection with the scam.
Cyberabad Commissioner of Police V C Sajjanar revealed the details of the case.
He explained that the arrests were the results of the efforts of a special team that had been constituted by the Cyberabad Police to identify and raid the godowns manufacturing and storing low-quality helmets in Cyberabad to deal with the rising menace of the circulation of such helmets in the city.
"The number of fatalities related to road accidents has gone up drastically as the number of fake helmet sellers has been growing. That was when the Cyberabad Police took up this drive to bust manufacturers and sellers of low quality helmets in Cyberabad. We have found that most of the manufacturing units are run out of areas in the National Capital Region," the CP said.
"The team identified a manufacturing unit run by Dheeraj Kumar and Anil Kumar, who were operating out of Ghaziabad. The two had been manufacturing duplicate helmets, made of cheap plastic, fibre and styrofoam, and supplying them to the sellers in the city under various brand names, including Aashirwad Helmets and Accessories, Hero and Duro. The fake helmets even bore forged ISI marks. The manufactures were running a flourishing business, where they would manufacture the helmets at a cost of about Rs 100 to 200, and sell them for about Rs 500. We apprehended the two in Ghaziabad, and have now brought them to the city. 10 FIRs have been registered against them for illegally manufacturing and distributing helmets that provide no protection to riders," he added.
Sajjanar urged the motorcyclists in the city to be vigilant while buying helmets to avoid any fatalities or injuries.
