Asha workers staged a protest today at the DME office premises in Koti, demanding a fixed salary of Rs 18,000 as promised by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy during his electioneering.
They insisted that the promises made by the Congress to Asha workers before the elections be fulfilled immediately.
This led to tension at the DME office. An argument broke out between the police and the workers. Sultan Bazar ACP K Shankar, who attempted to pacify the protesters, was surrounded by them. Subsequently, the police arrested the workers and took them into custody.
During the incident, an Asha worker who was being transported in a DCM van to the police station allegedly slapped Sultan Bazar CI Srinivas Chary after her leg was injured while she was forcibly being moved into the van. A heated argument ensued during the confrontation, during which two Asha workers also fainted and were rushed to Osmania Hospital. Doctors said that the condition of Santosh, one of the workers, was critical.
The workers demanded an apology from the ACP and the CI for their alleged misconduct. They warned of further action if the police failed to issue an apology.
The workers also lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission against the ACP and the CI, accusing them of brutality. Lawyer Rama Rao Immaneni called for strict action against the police officers for exceeding their limits of authority.
