BRS working president and former minister K T Rama Rao today strongly condemned what he called police brutality against former BRS MLAs Peddi Sudarshan Reddy and Gandra Venkataramana Reddy, and other party leaders and activists.
He asked whether the right to protest peacefully still existed in the country.
The protest was organized by the BRS in response to the alleged suicide of Chukka Ramesh, who, according to the party, took his life due to harassment by followers of minister Seethakka.
KTR said that it was undemocratic for the police to stop a peaceful protest. Referring to the Mulugu police, who halted the BRS protest citing the Police Act while granting permission to Congress leaders to visit, KTR alleged that certain police officials were acting like puppets of the ruling party.
He also accused the police of conducting overnight raids across the Mulugu constituency since Sunday midnight and illegally arresting BRS activists and leaders.
He demanded that the police clarify upon whose orders they forcibly entered homes and arrested 2,000 BRS activists.
KTR also criticized some police officers for continuing to "harass" BRS workers, and said that their approach had not changed even after receiving strictures from the courts.
