Andhra Pradesh Industries & IT Minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy died of cardiac arrest this morning.
He was 50.
Apollo Hospital (Jubilee Hills) authorities said that Reddy breathed his last at 9:16 am.
He was brought to the hospital by his family members at 7:45 am, and doctors said that he was unresponsive by then. They admitted him into the ICU and tried to save his life for 90 minutes through CPR, but in vain.
The body of the minister was taken to his Jubilee Hills residence from the Apollo Hospital.
Reddy was the son of industrialist and former YSRCP MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy. He was born on November 2, 1971, and completed M. Sc. from Manchester University in England.
He entered active politics during the 2014 Assembly elections and won from the Atmakur Assembly constituency of Nellore district.
He retained his seat in the 2019 Assembly elections and went on to become the Industries & IT minister in the Y S Jaganmohan Reddy cabinet. He was known to be a close friend of the AP CM.
Reddy returned to the city on Sunday from Dubai after taking part in Dubai Expo for a week. He had recovered from Covid last month after being diagnosed with it on January 22, 2022. Given that he was known for an obsession with fitness, doctors believe that the cardiac arrest may have been a post-Covid complication.
The AP government has decided to hold the last rites of the minister with full state honours.
The last rites of the minister will be performed at his native place Brahmanpally in Nellore district after his son, who is currently studying in the US, returns.
The state government has declared two days' mourning in the state as a mark of respect for Reddy.
