A quiet village in Telangana is now shining bright on India's renewable energy map.
Kondareddypally, the native village of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has achieved the rare distinction of becoming South India's first fully solar-powered village due to the Telangana government's green energy mission.
Located in Vangoor mandal of Nagarkurnool district, the project covers 514 houses and 11 government buildings. Of these, 480 houses are already running on 3 kW rooftop solar panels, while schools and government offices are powered by 60 kW solar units. Even the 34 mud-walled homes will soon be covered once their Indiramma houses are completed.
Each house now generates about 360 units of electricity per month, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and eliminating monthly electricity bills.
What makes Kondareddypally unique is not just self-reliance but also income generation. Surplus energy is supplied to the grid at Rs 5.25 per unit. In September alone, the village exported one lakh units, earning nearly Rs 5 lakh - a first-of-its-kind example of villagers becoming green entrepreneurs. The initiative has made Kondareddypally both self-sufficient and a contributor of clean energy to Telangana's grid.
The Rs 10.53-crore project is funded through a Rs 3.56-crore subsidy from the Centre, Rs 4.09 crore in CSR support from M/s Premier Energies, and Rs 2.59 crore for infrastructure by the State.
Officials describe Kondareddypally as a model solar village that blends modern technology with rural life. The project marks a milestone in Telangana's efforts to cut its carbon footprint, promote renewable energy and strengthen rural economies.
