Veteran Congress leader V Hanumantha Rao today wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the latter to withdraw the existing reservation system that debars members belonging to the OBC creamy layer from availing themselves of the benefits of the quota system.
Referring in his letter to the oft-quoted statement about the PM, that he himself belonged to the OBC community, Rao said, "The Centre must withdraw the system of excluding the OBC creamy layer from benefiting from reservations. Instead, a 27% reservation for all OBCs must be implemented. The cancellation of the existing system is what will bring justice to the BCs. Without this, the BC community will not get justice even after 100 years."
He also alleged that the BCs were not being able to "enjoy" the existing 27% reservation due to the creamy layer system, and added that the quota currently benefitted "a meagre 9 to 10% of the BCs".
Citing the example of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, he asked in his letter whether the CM had given ministerial posts to his Cabinet colleagues on the basis of the 27% reservation policy, and reiterated his demand that the current system be changed.
