Union Minister Kishan Reddy today said that the union government would hold special programs to celebrate September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day.
Speaking to media persons, he called upon the people of the State to make the programs a grand success by taking part in them in large numbers.
He said that the national flag was hoisted on the occasion of the liberation of the then Hyderabad State from the anarchic rule of the Nizam on September 17, 1948, and that while every such event in history was celebrated with enthusiasm, it was unfortunate that the Hyderabad liberation day had not been celebrated officially for the last 75 years.
He added that for the last 25 years the BJP had been fighting for official Telangana Liberation Day celebrations, but in vain. He alleged that neither the BRS-led State government nor the Congress was interested in holding the celebrations. He however said that there was no question of any compromise on the issue for the BJP, and pointed out to the union government-organised celebrations last year.
"On September 17 last year, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, the union government had officially organized a Telangana Liberation Day festival. 75 years ago, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel hoisted the tricolour in Hyderabad. After 75 years, Abhinav Sardar Patel Amit Shah celebrated the festival in Hyderabad last year," he said.
