MIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah asking him to declare the upcoming September 17 as National Unity Day.
In his letter, Owaisi asked Shah why the BJP-led union government did not hold celebrations for September 17 in an official manner so far in its eight-year rule.
He told the union home minister that the AIMIM would take out a massive Tiranga rally on September 17 in the Old City area of Hyderabad, as also hold a bike rally.
The party would also hold a public meeting in the Old City on that day to celebrate the occasion, and all the MLAs of the party would take part in the public meeting, Owaisi added.
The MP called upon all the people of the State to take part in the celebrations including the public meeting.
Standing up for Muslims, Owaisi claimed that the Hindus and Muslims of the then Hyderabad princely state had fought together for liberation, and that the fight was not meant for the liberation of a piece of land but against the immigration of people, feudalism and autocracy.
He also told Shah that the Razakars who had carried out physical attacks on the people of Hyderabad State had left for Pakistan after its liberation, and that those who wanted to stay in their own lands had stayed back in Hyderabad.
He asserted that the MIM had never opposed the liberation of Hyderabad State, and that September 17 of 1947 was nothing but the merger of the princely state into the Indian union.
He claimed that Muslim leaders like Turrebaaz Khan and Maqdoom Mohiuddin had also fought ferociously for the merger of Hyderabad State into India, and said that no one should forget their sacrifices.
Noting that the union government had decided to hold September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day, Owaisi said that he was also writing a letter to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.
