In a case of inebriated violence, a man in Visakhapatnam flung acid at his first wife on Monday. Passers-by who heard the victim's anguished cries rushed her to a hospital, while the culprit fled the scene.
According to sources, auto driver Munna had married Sathya a few years ago and begot 2 daughters by her.
However, Munna allegedly married a 2nd time a couple of months ago, leaving his first wife to fend for herself. Munna had also taken their 2 daughters along with him.
Sathya started living with her brother, and would take on odd jobs to support herself.
On Monday evening, an intoxicated Munna reportedly turned up at Sathya's brother's residence and lured her to a deserted region under the pretext of wanting to sort out issues with her, and flung acid at her.
Sathya has reportedly sustained major burns on the left side of her face and on her left arm.
Addressing the media, her brother questioned the necessity for Munna to attack his sister in such a manner when she had never raised any objection to her husband's 2nd marriage. The brother also claims that Munna regularly abused his sister in a drunken state.
Women's rights organisations have entered the fray, and demand that Munna be severely punished. On the part of the police, they are working towards nabbing the absconding husband.
