The Hyderabad City Traffic Police on Saturday advised drivers to use low beams while driving on the city roads during the nights.
High beams were causing a lot of inconvenience to the drivers of two- and four-wheelers, they said. High beams landed on the eyes of oncoming drivers' directly, causing temporarily loss of eye sight, and resulting in the drivers losing their control over their vehicles and causing accidents.
Also, high beams resulted in pedestrians being unable to judge the speeds of oncoming vehicles and the distances of the vehicles while crossing roads due to the direct focus of the lights, the police said.
According to the Additional CP (Traffic), regular drivers were facing problems of eye sight due to the effect of the high beams. Even the driver of a vehicle who was near a pedestrian crossing would find it tough to notice the pedestrians crossing due to the high beam lights of the vehicles coming from the opposite lane of the road, which could cause accidents.
High beam lights of oncoming vehicles also caused inconveniences to the drivers in accessing the rear and side mirror views properly.
As many as 981 pedestrians were killed in 2012 in accidents that took place mostly during the nights, the Addl CP said. Similarly, 925 persons were killed in 2013, and this year, up to October 31, 811 pedestrians had died in road accidents.
Therefore, the Hyderabad City Traffic police have advised all commuters to use low beam lights, and use half shades on the head lights of all types of vehicles, which was safe for all the road users. (INN)
