An under-construction bridge across the Manair river collapsed in Odedu village of Mutharam mandal in Peddapalli district of Telangana today.
The bridge is being constructed over the Manair river to reduce the distance between Odedu village of Peddapalli district and Garmillapalli village of Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.
Two girders collapsed due to strong winds. A tragedy was averted as the incident occurred past midnight when there was no one around. Villagers alerted the police about the incident today.
The construction of the bridge was started in 2016 at an estimated cost of Rs 46 crore, but its works were delayed due to changes of contractors and poor sanctioning of funds.
Responding to the incident, R&B officials said that the cement girders would have collapsed due to the gusts of wind, and said that they were conducting a full investigation.
