The Central team led by National Dam Safety Authority Chairman Anil Jain examined the Lakshmi (Medigadda) barrage of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district on Tuesday.
Members of the team, which was constituted by the union government following the loud collapse of a small portion of the barrage on the night of October 21, directly inspected the collapsed area of the bridge and the cracks.
At the 20th pillar, the team went down with the help of a ladder and inspected the damaged area thoroughly.
They asked the project officials what happened on the day that the bridge caved in, and moved around the area. After the observation was complete, the members of the team left the barrage.
The members will submit their report to the Ministry of Jal Shakti in two days.
The 1.6 km-long barrage has 87 pillars, and its storage capacity is 16.17 TMCFT. On October 21, the 20th pier of the barrage collapsed with a loud noise. As a result, the bridge between pillars 18, 19, 20 and 21 in the B block has sagged by one foot.
The incident prompted the KLIP officials to open all gates of the barrage to discharge around 10.7 TMCFT of water stored in it to facilitate a thorough inspection of the pillars. The police also temporarily closed the bridge of the barrage across the Godavari river that links Telangana's Mahadevpur mandal with Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district as a safety precaution.
