Leader Of Opposition in the Telangana State Legislative Council Mohammad Ali Shabbir on Sunday slammed KCR for his threats to the Opposition leaders over the Telangana-Maharashtra Godavari water agreement, and claimed that the TRS would meet the same fate as the TDP did if it continued its "purge" of dissent.
Accompanied by senior Congress leaders including TPCC Vice-President Mallu Ravi and ex-TPCC President Ponnala Lakshmaiah, and the heads of various frontal organizations, Shabbir Ali paid tributes to the two persons who died during the protests against the sharp hike in power tariff in united Andhra Pradesh back in 2000 during the TDP-led government's regime.
Speaking on the occasion, Shabbir Ali alleged that the State government was following the footsteps of the TDP in suppressing the people.
He pointed out the recent incident in which the State controlled police allegedly baton-charged the protesting farmers who were demanding uninterrupted power supply in the Medak district. He also pointed out the alleged manhandling of the Mallanna Sagar protesters by the police forces.
"The manner in which the government handled the farmer agitation against the forcible land acquisition for Mallanna Sagar reminded me of police excesses that the TDP had resorted to 16 years ago," he said. He claimed that the TRS would meet the same fate as the TDP if it continued its "show of strength".
Shabbir Ali also pointed out a statement made by Telangana Irrigation Minster T Harish Rao in which he supposedly confessed that the State government had not yet made a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project.
"Detailed reports are generally made by officials even for projects as small as laying of roads or construction of buildings. But the TRS-led government initiated the tender process for works worth lakhs of crores without preparing any DPRs. This is highly unprofessional. At this level of efficiency, the government will need a miracle of sorts to finish the construction of the reservoirs - that is, if they want to complete it by 2019," he said.
Shabbir Ali added that the irrigation minister's plans were premature and excessively ambitious.
