Stage artiste and Telugu cine actor "Kallu" Chidambaram passed away in a private hospital on Monday morning.
He was 70, and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
Chidambaram was a native of Akkayyapalem in Visakhapatnam. He was ailing from a respiratory problem for some time. When his health deteriorated, he was admitted to a private hospital, where he breathed his last this morning.
The actor was popularly known as "Kallu" Chidambaram as he had made his screen debut with the film Kallu, based on Gollapudi Maruti Rao's playlet and directed by cinematographer M V Raghu, in 1987. He won the Nandi award for his performance in his very first film.
While working as an Assistant Engineer in the Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Chidambaram actively participated in stage plays. He acted on stage for 12 years. For the welfare of stage artistes, Chidambaram had even formed a "Sakala Kalala Samakhya" with 1,600 artistes.
When he landed in debts, he stepped into the film field in 1987 with Kallu, and portrayed humorous roles in over 300 films, including Kondaveeti Donga, Chanti, Ammoru, Pelli Pandiri, Fools, Siddhu From Srikakulam, Mrugaraju, Shweta Nagu, Glamour, Sivangi, Gangaputrulu, Kalachakram, Aakaram, Tholi Paata, Mytri, Aa Anthastulo, Premaku Sai, Sri Sai Sankalpam, April 1 Vidudala, Aa Okkati Adakku, Govinda Govinda, Jambalakadipamba, Money, Money Money and more.
He also organized monthly programs.
