A student from Telangana, Pole Chandrashekar, 28, was fatally shot in an early-morning incident in Dallas, Texas, sparking grief and calls for swift government action.
Chandrasekhar, a resident of B N Reddy Nagar in L B Nagar, Hyderabad, had completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 2023 and then moved to the United States to pursue further studies. Recent reports suggest he had earned a master's degree and was working part-time at a gas station in Dallas.
He was confronted at the gas station in the wee hours of October 4 (local time) and shot by an unidentified assailant - likely in an attempted robbery.
His brother, Damodar, said that Chandrashekar had recently completed his studies and was waiting for a full-time position while working to support himself.
In response, former minister T Harish Rao and local MLA D Sudheer Reddy visited the student's family in Hyderabad to express condolences and offer support. Rao publicly mourned the loss of the young student, and called for urgent action to repatriate his remains and to protect the rights of students abroad.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy too expressed grief over the incident and assured the family of State assistance. He also urged Central authorities and foreign missions to expedite the process of bringing Chandrashekar's body back to Hyderabad for the final rites.
The Consulate General of India, Houston, has extended condolences and said it remained in touch with both the family and American officials to coordinate investigations and support repatriation efforts.
