Hours before the much-hyped Telangana march is to begin on Sunday, Osmania University has taken on a tense air. There was a lathi charge in OU as students tried to break the security cordon there. Agitators there pelted stones on the police, who in turn fired tar gas shells.
Congress MPs want to protest outside the CM's office, protesting the preventive arrests made by the government. Senior Congress MP K Jana Reddy, who is a vociferous Telangana supporter, expressed his ire at what all Telangana activists feel are the government's attempts to clamp down on the Telangana march. The general opinion is that the government has only nominally given its permission for the march, and that in reality it is trying to suppress the movement.
The government, on the other hand, has a brand to showcase to the world tomorrow - an international biodiversity conference begins on October 1.
Several important leaders were arrested today, including Congress MP Madhu Yaskhi, who was taken to the Golconda police station.
The Telangana March is a rally called by the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee, the key socio-political body in AP that demands a separate state for the region of Telangana.
