Union Coal and Mines Minister Kishan Reddy today assured the cotton farmers of Telangana that the Union government would support them.
Meeting Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh in Delhi today, Reddy discussed the challenges faced by Telangana's cotton farmers and handed over petitions about their concerns.
Speaking after that, he said that the Union government would continue to support the State's farmers and cooperate with the Telangana government in ensuring smooth cotton procurement.
He urged the farmers not to sell their cotton outside at low prices, and said that the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) was buying cotton although there had been some delays.
He advised the farmers to sell their crops only to the CCI, which accepted cotton with a moisture content of less than 12%.
Reddy said that there would be 122 cotton purchase centres, each equipped with machines to measure moisture content, and that committees would be set up at these centres to assist the farmers. He urged the farmers to report any malpractice to the concerned authorities.
