Lift Curbs On Media: Lawyers

The Joint Action Committee Of Telangana Lawyers approached State Human Rights Commission to lift the restrictions on media.
Hyderabad | 7th January 2011
The Joint Action Committee Of Telangana Lawyers on Friday sought the intervention of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to lift the restrictions imposed on media coverage imposed by the National Broadcasters Association to ward off any untoward incident in the wake of the Justice B N Srikrishna Committee Report being made public.

Taking the petition for hearing, the SHRC directed Director General Of Police Aravinda Rao to submit a report on restrictions on media before January 11th.

The lawyers alleged that the restrictions on media, especially TV channels, were an attack on the freedom of press, and are contrary to the values of democracy.

Earlier, advocates and journalists took out a rally in Warangal on Friday against the restrictions on press.

The National Broadcasters Association (NBA) and police issued strict guidelines to both electronic and print media in the wake of Justice Srikrishna Committee coming out with its recommendation on the bifurcation of the state.

Both NBA and police warned media houses of stringent action if they violated the norms.

@sasasay: throwing petrol bombs at the police is pathetic too. it's a non-bailable offence, punishable by years of imprisonment.

and once a student has a criminal police case against him, i'd like to see him ever getting a government job or a visa to fly abroad.

the police are continuously victimised by false propaganda in these protests. they have to please the political bosses as well as maintain law and order as well as not seriously harm any students. and you want the media to portray the police as villians for all this?

the students *want* the police to fire against them, and the media to cover it as persecution of innocent youngsters. the violence is always instigated by the students.

the students should be grateful they are in a country where the police are not imprisoning them for burning government and private property, and for harming government employees doing their duty.

Stopping the media from showing the protest is a pathetic decision taken by government. Without any eye on police by national and local media, police would do whatever they want. Tomorrow one cannot even protest for price rise, or scams or that matter anything. Is there any democracy left in india?
