Telangana Municipal and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao today laid the foundation stone for a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with a capacity of 100 MLD (million litres per day) at Hyderabad's Fathenagar area. The plant has reportedly been built at an estimated cost of Rs 317 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Rao said that the state government was committed to addressing sewage and sanitation issues and that as par of this, it would set up a number of STPs in the state capital.
"Our government will construct 17 STPs with a capacity of 376.50 MLD each in the Hussain Sagar catchment area at a cost of Rs 1,280 crore. The plants will be set up at the Kukatpally, Quthbullapur and Serilingampally circles," he stated.
Explaining the need for the STPs, the minister said, "Hyderabad is growing a city where the number of industries and investments has been skyrocketing. As more and more people migrate into the city, the number of apartments and houses is also increasing. Currently, Hyderabad produces about 1,950 million litres of sewage every day. Out of that about 90 to 94% reaches the Musi because of gravity. This then flows into the Krishna, subsequently getting drained into the sea. There is, therefore, an urgent need to address the problem of sewage disposal. Right now, only about 40% of the sewage gets treated at existing STPs. With 17 STPs we can treat 55 to 60% of the waste water. That is why we have decided to set up the new plants."
"Further, nine persons in the Bholakpur area in Secunderabad have lost their lives due to consumption of unsuitable water and drainage issues. We also hope to be able to prevent such incidents in the future," he added.
