Telangana Issue Rocks Assembly

Except for a statement by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on the SC-ST sub-plan, the House could not transact any business on Tuesday.
Hyderabad | 27th March 2012
The demand for the introduction of a Telangana resolution continued to disrupt the proceedings of the state Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

Except for a statement by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on the SC-ST sub-plan, the House could not transact any business.

As soon as the House met on Tuesday, TDP MLA M Narasimhulu, TRS floor leader Etala Rajender, CPI's G Mallesh and BJP's E Lakshminarayana moved adjournment motions seeking discussions on the Telangana resolution, and on the suicides by students and youth demanding statehood for the region.

CPM's J Ranga Reddy, too, gave an adjournment motion on the SC-ST sub-plan.

However, Speaker Nadendla Manohar disallowed all the motions.

Independent MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy and TDP's Narasimhulu rushed to the Speaker's podium, demanding a Telangana resolution in the House. Soon, they were followed by TRS, TDP and BJP MLAs.

Following the uproar created by these MLA, the Speaker adjourned the House for half-an-hour.

When the House met again at 10:23am, at least 10 Congress MLAs from the Telangana region, including Pratap Reddy, Muthyam Reddy, Praveen Kumar Reddy and K Laxma Reddy, joined the opposition party MLAs, who were raising pro-Telangana slogans.

Amidst the din, the Speaker announced that all the questions listed for Question Hour shall be deemed to have been answered, and that the demands shall be deemed to be laid on the Table. In about 5 minutes, the Speaker adjourned the House again, for half-an-hour.

When the House resumed its business at 12:40pm, Deputy Speaker Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who was on the chair, announced that the Chief Minister would make a statement on the sub-plan for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Following the announcement, all MLAs resumed their seats, allowing the Chief Minister to make his statement.

After the statement, while Kiran Kumar Reddy was being greeted by Congress MLAs for the announcement on the SC-ST sub-plan, the TRS MLAs went to the CM's seat on the Treasury benches.

The other MLAs from the region continued the slogan-shouting, demanding a Telangana resolution.

Amidst the din, the Deputy Speaker adjourned the House for the day. (INN)
