Telangana BJP president K Laxman today demanded that the state government order a judicial probe into the distribution of low quality saris to women, and also tender an apology.
Speaking to mediapersons at the party office here, Laxman alleged that Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had insulted the women by distributing to them saris costing about Rs 50.
"The saris were bought from Surat at Rs 200 per kg and distributed to the women. This is nothing but encouraging the contractors," he said.
The BJP leader wanted to know the number of saris purchased from the state's weavers and the number of weavers who benefited from the distribution. He added that the government should extend subsidies to the powerloom workers instead of distributing free saris and wasting public money.
He also wondered why the government placed orders only with Sircilla weavers and not with Gadwal, Narayanpet and Pochampally weavers.
