Tension prevailed in the Osmania University campus on Wednesday after a degree student committed suicide, citing a delay in formation of Telangana as the reason.

Hundreds of students gathered near Arts College where the student, V Santosh, a native of Kuchalapur of Adilabad district, was found dead hanging from a tree. He is suspected to have committed suicide on Tuesday night. Santosh left behind a suicide note blaming the ruling classes for creating obstacles in the formation of a Telangana state.

Angry OU students did not allow the police to shift the body to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary for autopsy. They wanted to take out a funeral procession from the university to Gun Park. However, the police did not permit the procession.

The agitators also asserted that the body would not be shifted unless all ministers and MPs of the Congress party from the Telangana region resign from their posts.

The police also resorted to lathicharge when some students tried to take out a rally. A few students were taken into custody.

Telangana Political Joint Action Committee chairman M Kodandaram, who visited the campus, also demanded that the ministers themselves participate in the funeral procession. He condemned the delay in the formation of a Telangana state, and said that the Centre was hesitant to take a decision on the statehood issue despite the fact that hundreds of students have committed suicide for the cause.

Following the suicide, the OU Students Joint Action Committee called for a shutdown of all educational institutions in the Telangana region. The University has also postponed all examinations scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. (INN)
