A group of blind students, expressing solidarity with the Telangana political Joint Action Committee (TPJAC) regarding introduction of separate statehood bill in the Parliament, was arrested when it made a bid to storm the state Assembly.
The visually-challenged students turned up at the first tier of the 3-tier security ring around the Assembly, and demanded that they be allowed to proceed further to register their protests.
The students declared that if they were not allowed to go further, they would stage a sit-in demonstration on the road. The police warned the protestors that they would be breaching the norms in force by protesting in the vicinity of the Assembly.
However, the students alleged that the police behaved in a high-handed manner. They demanded that Saifabad Police Inspector Umendar, who allegedly used filthy language against them, apologize to them unconditionally.
The agitated students staged their protest outside the Police Control Room, bringing the traffic to a halt for nearly half an hour.
The police tried to coax the protestors to call off their stir, but they were unrelenting. The blind students were subsequently arrested and taken to the Nampally Police station.
Elsewhere, students of the City College were caned by the police when they took out a procession outside the college, demanding the formation of a separate Telangana.
Raising slogans against the government, the students tried to go on despite being prevented by the police, leading to jolting and pushing. As a result, the police restored to lathi-charge to disburse them. However, no one was arrested or injured in the incident.
