To appease Lord Varuna (the Hindu god of rain) in the wake of incessant rains for the last five days, Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav today offered special prayers and performed a yagam in the Ujjaini Mahankali temple, Secunderabad.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that the State had been receiving extreme rains for the last five days, and that all irrigation projects constructed across the Godavari river had received unprecedented floods of water, inundating many low-lying areas.
"Therefore, upon the direction of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, I have performed the yagam to appease the rain god and for the well-being of the people," Talasani said.
Later, the minister inaugurated the making of a special saree to be presented to the goddess on the day of the Bonalu festival, and also distributed festival cheques worth Rs. 76 lakh to 91 temples located in the Secunderabad zone.
He directed the officials to complete all pending works related to the Bonalu festival in the next two days, and to ensure coordination among all the line departments for the successful conduct of the festival celebrations.
