CPM national general secretary Sitaram Yechuri condemned the attitude of the ruling BJP with regard to Special Status for Andhra Pradesh.
Extending support to the dharna staged by the YSR Congress Party at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for Special Status to the state, Yechuri alleged that the BJP, which had favoured Special Status for the residual state when in Opposition, had changed its stand after assuming power at the Centre. During the debate in Parliament on AP's bifurcation, the BJP had risen and supported Special Status for AP, but had now changed tack and was keeping mum on the issue, he said.
He reminded the audience that the CPM had already demanded that the Centre do justice to the residual state.
He also declared that his party was ready to fight for special status to AP in unison with other political parties inside and outside Parliament.
