The Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the sensational Srishti Fertility Center scam has intensified its investigation, registering nine cases so far and filing a petition today seeking police custody of the key accused for further interrogation.
Police have booked nine separate cases against the fertility centre on charges of selling babies under the guise of surrogacy. A total of 27 people, including the prime accused Dr Namrata, have been arrested. The SIT has now sought two days' custody of Dr Namrata, her son Jayant Krishna, and associates Sadanandam and Chenna Rao.
The racket - which shocked the Telugu States - was recently handed over to the SIT for a deeper investigation. Officials are examining the role of every individual linked to the illegal surrogacy network allegedly run by Dr Namrata. Investigators have begun their probe from the Srishti Fertility Centre in Visakhapatnam, tracking how babies were allegedly procured from couples in other States and sold through a well-organised network. Nearly 80 children are suspected to have been trafficked so far.
SIT officials are also coordinating with other State agencies to gather the details of over 10 additional cases registered against Dr Namrata in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the network and ensure justice for the affected families.
