The SHE Teams of the Hyderabad police today said that 488 persons had been caught red-handed teasing and harassing women at Ganesh pandals on the final day of immersion.
In order to provide a safe environment to the women of the city, at public places as well as during transit, the SHE Teams operate in mufti and regularly move around crowded and specified areas where there is a possibility of harassment or teasing of women. Wherever such harassment is noticed, the accused are nabbed with video evidence, and relevant cases are registered against them.
The teams were deployed to monitor Ganesh pandals and other crowded areas during the recent Ganesh festivities from September 18 to 28, and caught red-handed 488 persons who were indulging in obscene acts, touching or following women inappropriately, on the final day of immersion, with video evidence.
The teams caught the miscreants at the Bada Ganesh pandal in Khairatabad, and at NTR Marg, Tank Bund and Khairatabad.
When the women were involved in immersion of idols or other devotional activities in queues and crowded places, the mischief mongers were taking advantage of the situation and indulging in inappropriate acts. The miscreants were auto drivers, private employees and even government employees, and were causing embarrassment to the women by touching them inappropriately, passing lewd comments and gestures.
In 122 of the 488 cases, petty cases were registered, and the accused were produced before courts and were convicted and sentenced to 3-6 days by the magistrate concerned. In 111 cases the accused were warned and counselled. In 255 cases the accused are yet to be produced in court.
The SHE Teams are a call or click away. Any complaint related to harassment or teasing may be sent on the Hyderabad Police Whatsapp number 9490616555. You may, of course, also dial 100 in case of any emergencies.
