The Union Home Ministry has directed the Bureau Of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to enhance security in the
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamsabad along with 50 other airports in the country, in a time-bound manner.
The BCAS was also directed to install CCTV cameras at vital locations, deploy adequate security staff, and raise the height of perimeter walls. The CISF was directed to make bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs readily available.
A biometric entry system for airport employees was one of the other security measures suggested to BCAS by the Home Ministry.
One other security measure to be put in place is the erection of an adequate number of watch-towers at the airport site.
The Home Ministry's directives came at a review meeting on airport security chaired by Home Secretary Gopal Krishna Pillai. The meeting was called to discuss measures to thwart any possible terror attack or sabotage at airports around the country.
A Home Ministry official said that security in Delhi and Mumbai airport was not of a major concern, but certain security gaps exist in airports like the one in Hyderabad. He said that the Home Ministry wanted to ensure that all such security gaps were plugged.
