A bomb blast ripped German Bakery in Koregaon Park near Osho Ashram in Pune at 7:15pm on Saturday evening, killing at least 8 and injuring over 50. The bakery is close to a Jewish prayer house, and is frequented by foreigners who visit the Osho Ashram. At least 5 among those who were killed are foreigners.
According to police, an explosive device went off when a waiter tried to check the contents of an unattended bag. Preliminary reports indicate that another bag of explosives has been found at the site
Doctors say it is difficult to identify bodies as they are charred. The injured are being moved to Budhrani and Sasson hospitals.
Sources say there were intelligence inputs about attacks on religious or crowded places. The Union Home Secretary, G K Pillai, has stated that this is a terror attack. He also said that David Headly, the 26/11 suspect, had even done a recce of the site when he visited the Osho Ashram twice in 2008-2009.
It is suspected that more than the Osho Ashram, it is the Jewish prayer centre that was the target for the terror attacks. Foreigners frequent both places.
This is the first terror attack in India since the game-changing 26/11 attack on Mumbai.
