Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today alleged again that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was against reservations and was trying to eliminate reservations, against the interests of the majority of the people.
Addressing a "Jana Jatara Sabha" of the Congress at Nirmal in Telangana today, Gandhi said that the Congress was promising to increase reservations if voted to power in the Lok Sabha elections, but that the BJP leaders on the contrary wanted to abolish them altogether.
"The removal of the 50% cap on reservations is very important for increasing the reservations, and that has been promised in the Congress manifesto. Modi should tell the people whether the 50% limit on reservations will be removed by him or not. Unfortunately, nowhere in his speeches so far has Modi promised to remove that cap on reservations," Gandhi said.
"The BJP will eventually amend the Constitution and abolish reservations completely if voted to power for the third term. The BJP's aim is to take away the rights of the poor and benefit the rich," Gandhi added, and said that the Lok Sabha elections were a competition between two groups - the Congress which would protect the Constitution, and the BJP which would change it.
He said that the Congress would increase reservations for all groups according to their proportion in the population if voted to power.
He also promised that the Congress would take up a caste census and a financial survey across the country if it won the elections.
