The Telangana Congress staged a massive dharna today at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the implementation of 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the State.
The protest, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, was organised under the guidance of the State Congress leadership. The participants included Telangana ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs, corporation chairpersons and DCC presidents, and prominent BC leaders from across the State. Leaders from other political parties, particularly those in the INDIA bloc alliance, also joined the protest to express their support.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said that he was committed to securing BC reservations, and that he would continue the fight from "gully to Delhi".
He said that the BC reservations bill had been passed by the Assembly and forwarded to the President for assent, and that the subsequent delay in approval was unwarranted. He expressed disappointment that his request for an appointment with the President to discuss the issue was denied, and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah might have influenced the President's decision to deny him an appointment.
He said that it was clear that the Union government lacked urgency in implementing the reservations, and criticised the BJP for blocking the measure under the pretext of preventing benefits from reaching Muslims. He vowed to continue the agitation until the reservations were implemented, and even work to remove Modi if they were not.
He also reiterated his demand for a nationwide caste census, similar to the one conducted in Telangana.
