After an unusual dry spell for a few days, the sudden heavy downpour on Wednesday night left many low-lying areas inundated and streets with knee-deep stagnating rain water in Hyderabad.
Many colonies in the low-lying areas, especially in Malkajgiri, Nacharam and Uppal, were waterlogged, and roads and streets in Panjagutta, Banjara Hills, Ameerpet, Secunderabad, Uppal, Boduppal, Mehdipatnam, L B Nagar, RTC Cross Roads and other areas were inundated with rain water.
Heavy rains in the Neredmet and Malkajgiri areas resulted in the nearby Bandla Cheruvu tank overflowing. In some areas like East Anandbagh, Venkateswara Nagar, Shirdi Nagar etc, drain water entered the houses putting the residents to a lot of inconvenience.
A city bus got stuck in knee-deep water in Nacharam. Five passengers were traveling in the bus. The GHMC authorities upon receipt of information rushed to the spot and pulled out the bus using a crane.
GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy initiated relief and rescue operations by pressing into service all monsoon emergency services. The emergency teams and field staff launched a massive operation and cleared the stagnated rain water in many areas. The authorities also kept many teams on standby to take up any emergency relief work.
The overnight rainfall recorded at various places ranged between 6 cm and 11 cm, with Nacharam receiving the highest rainfall.
