Hyderabad experienced a sudden shift in weather today, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat.
Heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, lashed several areas within the GHMC limits, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
Streets in Begum Bazaar, Koti, Sultan Bazaar, Abids, Basheer Bagh, Nampally, Liberty, Himayat Nagar, Narayanaguda, Lakdikapul and Tank Bund were inundated, with some roads submerged under waist-deep water.
The downpour left motorists and pedestrians struggling as stalled vehicles and fallen trees blocked several roads.
A large tree collapsed onto a car on the Khairatabad-Panjagutta road during the heavy rain. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but traffic congestion extended for several kilometres. Additional Traffic Commissioner Joel David arrived at the scene, and the DRS team swiftly cleared the tree to restore traffic flow.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad has forecast rain across all districts of Telangana from Thursday to Sunday, with temperatures expected to drop 2 to 4 degrees.
The IMD has also issued thunderstorm alerts for the entire State.
Following the sudden downpour, the minister in-charge of Hyderabad Ponnam Prabhakar directed the GHMC officials to remain on high alert and take the necessary precautions to prevent public inconvenience.
GHMC engineering teams have been instructed to clear floodwater from key areas, including the Secretariat, Raj Bhavan Road and Masab Tank, to ease traffic congestion, and HMWSSB jetting machines are being deployed to prevent drainage overflows.
The minister called for close coordination between the GHMC, police, water board and electricity department to ensure minimal disruption to the residents.
