About 120 foreign students from various disciplines were conferred their degrees on Wednesday, in a glittering ceremony.
On Wesneday, the Osmania University foreign relations office conducted the Sixth Degree Award Ceremony for foreign students, at the PGRR CDE Auditorium on OU campus.
About 120 foreign students from various disciplines were conferred their degrees, in a glittering ceremony. The students were from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Nepal, Somalia, China and other countries.
Speaking on the occasion as guest of honour, His Excellency Hassan Nourian, Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran, said that students from Iran "are satisfied with the teaching facilities at Osmania University". He added that Iran intends to sign an MoU with OU in the near future, for a faculty and student exchange program.
He said that Iran enjoys the first place in the educational generation in the Middle East, and the 16th in the world. He added that educational centres in Iran are making fast and good progress. He also hoped that the educational relationship between Iran and India would flourish further.
OU Vice Chancellor Prof. S Satyanarayana said that off-shore studies help students expose themselves to differnt cultures, and that this benefits them more than "reading a hundred books" would. He hoped that in future, the number of students in OU from foreign countries would grow.
OU Registrar Prof. M S N Reddy opined, "Knowledge gained helps students blossom into perfect human beings."
Prof. C Venugopal Rao, Director, UFRO, said that OU is now a home to about 4,500 foreign students hailing from as many as 80 countries. He added that during the academic year 2013-14, OU admitted 1,500 foreign students in various courses. This is 15% more than last academic year's intake, he said.
OU Examinations Controller Prof. G Bhikshamaiah and UFRO Joint Director Dr. G B Reddy, senior professors, administrative officers, principals, directors, non-teaching staff and students participated in the event. (INN)
