Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka today said that the Telangana government would introduce a Rohith Vemula Act at the earliest to address discrimination on campuses.
The Deputy CM met members of the Justice for Rohith Vemula Campaign Committee at Praja Bhavan. Members of the campaign committee submitted a draft of the Act, prepared by them in Karnataka, to the Deputy Chief Minister, and urged the government to introduce the Act in Telangana on the same lines.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhatti recalled that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi had written to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy urging the State government to introduce the Act, and informed the committee that his government would work towards bringing the legislation expeditiously after holding discussions with the Chief Minister.
During the meeting the committee also made several representations, including a demand for a transparent inquiry into the Rohith Vemula case and justice for him. They also sought relief for 50 students and two teachers against whom non-bailable cases were registered at the university following Vemula's death.
