Violence In Osmania Campus

Angry students in Osmania University pelted stones and set a bus on fire in protest against the arrest of protestors.
Hyderabad | 15th November 2010
Violence broke out in Osmania University campus after angry students pelted stones, and set on fire 1 road transport corporation bus during a rally to protest against the arrest of aspirants to the posts of sub-inspectors at the Director General Of Police office on Monday.

The students, under the aegis of the Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee, took out a huge rally in Osmania University, and demanded the release of police posts aspirants who had been arrested when they tried to barge inside the office of the Director General Of Police.

Raising slogans against police lathi-charge and arrest of aspirants, who were 'staging a peaceful agitation democratically', the JAC members demanded their release and the lifting of the cases filed against them. The JAC also demanded that the government register cases against the police officials who had rained lathi blows on the protestors.

The students also blamed the state government holding it responsible for the turn of events by acting in a high-handed manner.

The protestors demanded that the government make its stand clear on free zone issue, and declare Hyderabad as no free zone. They warned that they would not allow the government to conduct the written test for the recruitment tests for the posts of 1,200 sub-inspectorss until it made its stand clear on free zone issue.

The protestors further warned that the government would have to face serious consequences if it failed to release the aspirants.

Alleging that Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy had become a puppet in the hands of Seemandhra leaders, the students warned her to direct the police to refrain from acting in a high-handed manner with legitimate protestors.

Following the break-out of violence in the campus, Indra Reddy on Monday hastily called for a review meeting.

Meanwhile, an all-party delegation comprising of TDP leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy, TRS floor leader Etala Rajender and Damodar Reddy visited the Nampally police station, and expressed solidarity with the arrested protestors.
