Chidambaram said yesterday that there was no flip-flop on the part of the Central government on the Telangana issue. He said that the Government was simply responding to the altered situation that was a result of political parties changing their stand. He said there was nothing wrong with his December 9 statement, and that the media had projected his next announcement as a flip-flop.
The Home Minister also said that the UPA's Common Minimum Programme in 2004 had said that the government would consider the formation of the Telangana state at an appropriate time, and that major political parties in Andhra Pradesh had also fought the 2009 elections on the Telangana plank.
The Centre's earlier statement on holding wide-ranging consultations on the issue was seen as a betrayal of the Telangana cause by supporters in the T region, even as the rest of AP heaved a sigh of relief. Chidambaram then had to call for an all-party meeting again, which is set to take place on the 5th of Jan.
