This morning, the Cyberabad police apprehended most wanted Maoist Sanjoy Deepak Rao, Central Committee Member of the CPI (Maoist), near Malaysian Township, Kukatpally.

According to the Director General of Police, Deepak Rao is native of Shivagandha Nagar, Ambernath East PS, Thane district, Maharashtra. He is a B. Tech. (Electrical Engineering) graduate from the then Regional Engineering College and now NIT, Jammu & Kashmir. He was attracted to left wing extremist ideology and influenced by his father, who was a Communist Trade Union leader. While studying the REC in J&K, he and some of his friends supported the separatist movement of the Kashmir people.
After returning from J&K, he worked in the CPI-ML CRC group and the CPI-ML Rawoof group. In 1999, he, along with Konath Muralidharan alias Ajith, former CCM, formed the CPI-ML Naxalbari group. He was made in-charge of the Maharashtra wing of the group, and Muralidharan was the All-India Secretary.
In July 2000, he was arrested in Nandurbar district of Maharashtra. He was released from jail at the end of 2000. While working in Anantapur district in 2005, he was arrested again, and released from jail at the end of 2006.
In 2007 he married Saraswathi alias Madavi alias Parvathi, a native of Ananthapur district, also a CPI (Maoist) cadre. In 2014 the CPI ML Naxalbari was merged with the CPI Maoist party. K Muralidharan and Deepak were taken into the Central Committee as Central Committee Members.
In November 2021 he was elected as Secretary of the Western Ghats Special Zonal committee, and since then he has been working in the tri-junction (Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka) and Western Ghats, and organizing the CPI Maoist's activities.
In January 2023 he had some health issues and left the Western Ghats for an urban area for treatment. He recovered in March. He came to Hyderabad about four days back and was proceeding to Maad, Chhattisgarh, for a meeting. Meanwhile, on specific inputs given by the intelligence department, the Cyberabad police intercepted him on Friday morning in Kukatpally. A revolver with six live rounds, a laptop and other articles along with cash of Rs 47,250 were recovered from his possession. He was produced before a magistrate.
The DGP said that Deepak would be taken into police custody and interrogated to understand his involvement in various unlawful activities, his area of operation and his links with the activists in front and mass organisations in Telangana. He is wanted by the police of Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and the NIA. The government of Maharashtra even has a Rs 25,00,000 reward for information leading to his apprehension.
