Mahabubnagar district Collector Sridevi announced that the district had been rendered free of country-made liquor (saara).
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Sridevi said that the authorities had eradicated saara from 1,510 villages in the district.
She said that the officials had eliminated the production of the liquor from the district within three months, and had filed bind-over cases against 3,854 persons in the period.
She also said that they have adopted a new policy of collecting Rs. 1 lakh worth bonds from each of the persons against whom cases had been filed for a second time. In the process, she said that they had collected Rs. 17.30 lakhs, and that had showed its impact by reducing the preparation and sale of arrack in the district.
She made it clear that the administration would act tough against persons who tried to prepare and sell liquor.
"We have filed cases under the PD Act against 10 persons who prepared liquor by not caring for the pleas of the officials," she said.
