Compliance with the policy is now mandatory for all government, government-owned, non-residential and commercial buildings irrespective of the site or built-up area.
Hyderabad | 3rd April 2023
Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K T Rama Rao launched the "Telangana Cool Roof Policy 2023-28" today.
Compliance with the policy is now mandatory for all government, government-owned, non-residential and commercial buildings irrespective of the site area or built-up area. Occupancy certificates will be issued only after ensuring compliance with the policy.
For residential buildings that have a plot area of 600 square yards and above, a Cool Roof application is mandatory. For buildings that have a plot area of less than 600 square yards, it is optional or voluntary.
According to officials, the policy will be effective from April 1 this year.
Speaking on the occasion, Rao said that Telangana was the first State in the country to introduce a policy of this kind, which was aimed at making the State more thermally comfortable and heat-resilient, and bringing down energy consumption. Cool roof painting and tiles cost just about Rs 300 per square metre, making cool roofs among the simplest and most cost-effective ways to fight heat, he gushed, and added that the policy would greatly benefit the future generations.
The minister said that the State government had set a target of 5 sq km of cool roof area in Hyderabad and 2.5 sq km in rest of Telangana for the financial year 2023-24, and 200 sq km in Hyderabad and 100 sq km in the rest of Telangana by 2028-29.
