Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao today inaugurated a Construction and Development (C&D) waste recycling plant at Fathullaguda, near Nagole, in Hyderabad's L B Nagar area. This is the GHMC's second waste management plant of this kind.
The minister launched the plant, which reportedly has the capacity to recycle 500 metric tonnes of debris per day, along with Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Chairman and L B Nagar MLA Sudheer Reddy, and some other officials.
Speaking on the occasion, KTR said that the plant had been set up to address the problem of the accumulation of building debris and the pollution caused by this in the area. He added, "With this plant, Hyderabad's total C&D waste treatment capacity is now 1,000 tonnes per day. Plants like this are important since we generate 7,000 metric tonnes of building waste on a daily basis. So, it is crucial that we begin to reuse such refuse in a scientific manner. While such plants are rare in the country - Delhi and Ahmedabad have one each - Telangana has today inaugurated its second. In fact, a third one will be made operational in another six months."
Further, the minister stated, "Our aim is to construct similar plants in the state in the near future. With a comprehensive plan, we can reuse and recycle construction debris as well as domestic waste. We are already taking steps to produce power from dry waste and manufacture fertilisers using wet waste - a 20 MW power plant that uses waste has been established in the state and a similar 28 MW plant will also be established soon."
Appealing to the people of the city to cooperate with the Telangana government in its efforts to improve solid waste management, he urged them to call a toll free number, 1800-120-1159, to avail themselves of a nominally-priced waste disposal service, and stated, "I request the locals, the builders and all those engaged in construction activities to cooperate with our efforts to recycle and reuse C&D waste meaningfully."
Before the launch of this plant, KTR had launched a similar plant at Jeedimetla as well. The plant, set up in November last year, garnered attention for being the largest C&D refuse recycling plant in southern India and the fifth largest one in the nation.
