MIM head and MP Asaduddin Owaisi today made some controversial remarks regarding the Centre's plans to create more union territories in the country.
The leader claimed that what had started with Jammu and Kashmir, which was turned into a Union Territory (UT) through the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, would not end there.
"The Centre's move to make Jammu and Kashmir a Union Territory was just the beginning of such conversions. Other cities such as Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and others may soon also be demoted to UTs. They will take back powers from many more key cities soon," he alleged.
Owaisi's tirade against the Centre prompted Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy and firebrand BJP MLA T Raja Singh to lash out at the MIM chief.
Kishan Reddy condemned the remarks as "highly irresponsible", and said that the Centre had no such plans at all.
He also faulted Owaisi for walking out of the Parliament session even as representatives of the Centre were responding to the latter's questions.
Raja Singh too assailed the MIM chief for his comments, and alleged that the Hyderabad MP had "misled" all the political parties of the country with his speech on the floor of the Parliament.
He alleged that the MP's statements had revealed that he "lacked" any sense, and that the Centre had made no such proposal.
Singh also claimed that statements had been made in a bid to benefit the TRS in the upcoming MLC elections in the state.
The kerfuffle follows the Centre's introduction of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2021, today.
