The famous Khairatabad Ganesh will be going eco-friendly this year, with the idol being made of clay.
The Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi released a blueprint for the idol today and announced that it would be made of clay unlike the earlier practice of using Plaster of Paris and other chemicals.
The Samithi members said that the decision had been taken following the clear instructions of the Supreme Court and the High Court banning the usage of Plaster of Paris, synthetic colours and polluting chemicals.
The Samithi said that the idol would nevertheless be 50 feet tall, and would have an iron body with mesh, clay and water-based paints.
The idol, to be named Sri Panchamukha Maha Lakshmi Ganapathi, will have Lord Shanmuka Subrahmanya Swamy on its right and goddess Trisakthi Maha Saraswati on its left.
The State government too is promoting eco-friendliness in the festival in a big way now, and asking the people to use clay idols to protect the environment.
